Hey, I'm Vanity.
I’m a Black woman with nearly 20 years of experience dedicated to achieving equitable outcomes. My journey began in South Carolina, but I moved across the country as a child, living in Iowa and Connecticut before settling in New Jersey. This transient lifestyle gave me the opportunity to see different parts of the country and, unfortunately, to experience racism in various forms. One of the most vivid memories from my childhood involves my brother. When he transitioned from private to public school in the 3rd grade, my parents received a letter stating that he would be moved to a special education classroom within a week. Concerned, my parents went to the school and requested to see the test that had led to this decision. The administrators claimed they had misplaced the test results. My parents then provided my brother’s test scores from his private school, where he ranked in the top 1% for both ELA and Math. Faced with this evidence, the administrators quickly backtracked, apologized, and admitted they had made a mistake. This experience was one of my earliest encounters with individual and structural bias. My brother, a lively and energetic young Black boy, had been unfairly judged by his teacher and school administrators, who chose to use structural policies to address a perceived problem rather than confronting their own biases. Watching my parents navigate this situation, advocating for my brother and ultimately turning it into a learning opportunity for the educators involved, was transformative for me. It was during these formative years that I learned the power of advocacy, liberation, and healing. This understanding of bias and the need for advocacy in challenging environments laid the foundation for my passion for executive coaching. I remember the first time I engaged in executive coaching. I’d heard other leaders in my organization talk about it, but I was skeptical. How was a coach going to help me? The person I would be working with didn’t work for our organization, wasn’t in a similar role, and I didn’t have time to waste. I was leading four cross-functional teams and needed to focus on my work. Coaching was part of a fellowship that I was in, so I begrudgingly entered our first conversation. My incredible Black woman coach asked me two questions, and I was in tears. She immediately saw through the facade I was wearing, pretending that I had everything under control. She knew that I was overwhelmed and spotted it right away. During the rest of the call, she got to the root of why I was overwhelmed. She also situated my reality as a young Black woman leader at a predominantly white nonprofit in a historical context. We discussed the impact of my race and gender on what was happening around me, and she clearly named how I was falling into a pattern of overworking while my white colleagues were not. Before we left the call, she gave me tangible strategies to create boundaries while still setting my team up for success. After that call, I was hooked. I was relieved I had more sessions with her and excited about how my leadership would continue to grow and develop. From that point forward, I ensured I had a coach in every role. I also became a certified coach to be a more effective manager. Coaching has been a critical part of my success, and it can be for you too. The experiences I’ve had, from advocating for my brother to embracing executive coaching, have shaped my approach to leadership and personal development. I now work to create the same kind of healing, learning, and growth opportunities for others. I’m here to help you navigate your own challenges, understand the historical context of your role, and unlock your full potential as a leader.

I first met Vanity as a new teacher, she was one of the best coaches I ever had. She had a special way of gently guided me to improve my practices through deeply analyzing myself and the impact I was having on young scholars. Vanity has a way of making everyone feel comfortable while also being able to create a culture where she can push us to think beyond our typical frame of reference. This was pivotal in growing and shifting your minset
